"Men Grieve Differently "

People mourn consistent with their personalities. If a person has consistently been very reserved in their outward behavior, not displaying emotion freely then it is likely they will mourn in the same manor. Likewise, people who are very open in their expression of emotion will grieve in harmony with their character. Females usually are more comfortable sharing their "problems" in this way they receive comfort and consolation.

Men are more likely to mourn privately, inwardly rather than outward and openly. With males, society expects them to be provider, protector and the strong supporter of the rest of the family. In this way, any free expression of emotion is a sign of weakness. Men seem to be uncomfortable in displaying their emotions outwardly. Thus, they will immerse themselves in their work, keeping their focus on other areas as much as possible. If they do show tenderness, it is more likely to be as a sudden release of emotion when no one is watching.

Mourning is difficult work. It is work. There is no wrong way of mourning as long as there is a forward progression in our transition from our previous life prior to our loss toward our now changed life. This forward progression is not a smooth consistent forward motion. Rather it more often like a roller coaster ride, with movement up and down, side to side with a feeling of moving backward now and then. An occasional self examination which is always a good idea, will show that overall a forward direction is taking place, as we can see that we are continuing to accept the reality of our changed life and making the necessary choices to build a solid foundation in our new world.
