BILL STEED

Henderson, TN: Billy Burnett Steed age 86 passed away Monday May 19, 2014 at his home.

He was born December 7, 1927 in Memphis, TN the son of the late Asa Callier Steed and Ida Burnett Steed. The family moved to Henderson in 1939 where the family farmed. He went to school in Chester County and was a good basketball player and a member of the F.F.A. and graduated from Chester County High School in 1947. He married Bettye Jo Scott of Bemis in 1951 and they made their home in Henderson. He was in the Henderson Tennessee National Guard retiring after thirty plus years as Master Sargent. He worked at the Henderson Post Office as a Postal Carrier and then as a Postal Clerk and retired from the Post Office in 1994. Bill and Bettye were married sixty two and half years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Henderson.

Mr. Steed was a member of the Civitan Club, Elks Lodge, Chester and McNairy County Cattleman’s Association and Henderson Jaycees and was on the Board of the Farm Bureau of Henderson.

Bill loved taking care of his cattle and loved stamp collecting.

He is survived by his wife, Bettye Jo Scott Steed of Henderson; two daughters, Lorna Thompson and husband Tony of Henderson and Dianne Chappell of Henderson; three grandchildren, Aletha Thompson Glover (Bobby), Emily Kilzer O’Quin (Alan) and Thomas B. Winbush (Brandi) and six great grandchildren, Abbie Glover, Tyler Glover, Emma-Davis O’Quin, Mary-Alan O’Quin, Whit O’Quin and Shelby Winbush; a brother, Jim Steed and wife Patsy of Henderson and a sister, Mary S. Smith of Jackson.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Wednesday May 21, 2014 at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel with Stan Smith and Brad Patterson officiating and burial will follow with full Military Honors in Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis at 3:30 PM Wednesday.

The family will receive friends at Casey Chapel 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Tuesday.
