CATHERINE COMPTON

Henderson, TN: Sarah Catherine Grubbs Compton age 99 passed way November 08, 2014 at the Tennessee State Veteran Home in Humboldt, TN.

She was born and reared in Somerville, AL the daughter of the later Lucien Turney and Barbara Ellen Patterson Grubbs. She went to school in Somerville and graduated from Cotaco High School. She also went to Birmingham Southern University and received her teaching certificate. She taught elementary school and did some substitute teaching in her later years. She married Donald Euclid Compton of Hartselle, AL in 1941. They lived in many cities across the United States because of the 26 year career that her husband had in the U.S. Navy. Her family moved to Henderson in 1961 and they made their home in the Mifflin Community, where they farmed and Mrs. Compton was a homemaker. Mr. Compton passed away in 1986.

Catherine was an excellent seamstress and loved making all of the family’s clothes. She started the first Girl Scout Troop in this area. She loved crafts, working in the yard and growing a garden.

She was in the Senior Olympics and was a league bowler. She was also a member of the Henderson church of Christ.

Mrs. Compton is survived by a son Donald Compton and wife Nancy of Henderson; by two daughters, Barbara Bell of Henderson and Mary Smith and husband Barry of Atwood; six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

She was preceded by her husband Donald Compton, two brothers; Max Grubbs and Mark Grubbs, and a sister Ruth Jonston.

Funeral Services will be 1:00 PM Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel with Bro. Ben Flatt officiating with burial in the Chester County Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Casey Chapel 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM on Monday.
