CURTIS (CURT) FREEMAN HOPPER

born August 16,1963, died at his home in Savannah, Tennessee, on January 9, 2015, after a 16 month-long battle with lung cancer. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee but he spent his entire life in Savannah.

He was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church of Savannah, Tennessee. Mr. Hopper graduated from Hardin County High School in 1981 and went on to attend Memphis State University, graduating in 1987 with a Bachelors of Arts Degree. He later attended Nashville School of Law and received his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1992. He was admitted to the Tennessee Bar in 1992 as well. He was admitted to the Federal District Court, Western District of Tennessee in 1994. He practiced law with Hopper & Plunk, PLLC from 1992 until 2002 when he went into solo practice where he conducted his practice in criminal defense and domestic relations until 2014 when he was diagnosed with lung cancer. Mr. Hopper was also the Hardin County attorney from 2002 until 2014. In addition to the Tennessee Bar Association, Mr. Hopper held memberships in the Hardin Bar Association, the Tennessee County Attorneys Association, Tennessee Criminal Defense Attorneys, and the Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association (1992-98).

Mr. Hopper was an active member in the Savannah Kiwanis Club. He coached the youth baseball and football teams when his son was younger. Although he played golf, his favorite sporting endeavors were fishing and hunting which he participated in locally and which also took him to Alaska, Africa, Arkansas, Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma and Florida. Mr. Hopper was a very generous man who loved to give to his loved ones, friends and those in need.

A devoted son, father, and husband of enduring influence and inspiration, Mr. Hopper was preceded in death by his father, James Arguyle Hopper. He is survived by his mother, Sharron Beard Hopper; children, Benjamin DeBerry Hopper and Anna Catherine Hopper; and his former wife and life partner, Jeanie DeBerry Hopper; brothers, Russ Hopper (Andrea) and Guy Hopper (Rachel); and nieces, Stephanie Hopper, Madelyn Hopper, Alex Hopper and Jill DeBerry and nephews, Matt Hopper, Jack DeBerry and Josh Berry.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Hopper requested that memorials be made to the Darryl Worley Cancer Center.
