DELILAH FRYE HOLMES
Henderson, TN: Delilah Flint Frye Holmes, age 79, passed away July 22, 2017 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital.
She was born June 2, 1938 in Hamlet, NC, the daughter of the late Hobart Flint and Vera Elsie Greene Frye. She graduated from Hamlet High School in 1956 and in 1959 graduated from Charlotte Memorial Nursing School with an RN Degree and later received her bachelor’s degree from the College of St. Frances. She married Donald Earl Holmes in 1962. They made their home in Memphis and she worked at Baptist Central Hospital in Memphis as head of labor, delivery, and nursery. They moved to Jackson for a short time and then to Henderson in 1968. She worked at Jackson for a year and then started the LPN Program for Nursing at Crump Vocational School and then worked at Western Mental Health at Bolivar for thirty-three years, retiring in 2003.
She had been very involved with the American Red Cross and other community activities.
She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Henderson, being involved with the youth and WMU.
The joy of her life was her grandchildren.
Mrs. Holmes is survived by two daughters, Vera Lynn Holmes Reed and husband Steven of Henderson and Maria Holmes Clayton and husband Denny of Henderson and a son, Donald Earl ‘Donnie’ Holmes, Jr. and wife Linda of St. John’s, FL; seven grandchildren, Dara Young (Will), Logan Clayton, Ben Clayton, Brandon Holmes, Haley Holmes, Abby Wolter and Andrew Wolter and one great granddaughter, Brynli Young; three brothers, Ralph ‘Buddy’ Frye (Sharon) of Jacksonville, FL, Hobart ‘Bo’ Frye (Linda) of Hamlet, NC and William ‘Bill’ Frye (Irma) of Oak Island, NC and one sister, Beverly Arner (Howard) of St. John’s, FL.
Mrs. Holmes was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Donald Earl Holmes, Sr., February 21, 2010.
Memorial services will be 2:00 PM Sunday, July 30, 2017 at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel with Rev. Maurice Hays officiating. Burial will follow in Chester County Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Casey Chapel 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Saturday and 12:00 Noon Sunday until service time at 2:00 PM Sunday.
