Denny Edwin Maness

September 17, 1931 — August 7, 2014

Denny Maness, 82, died August 7, 2014, at home in Chester County with his wife by his side. He was born September 17, 1931, in Chester County to Millard and Wilma Maness.

Denny married the love of his life, Bernice (Cox) in 1950 and shortly thereafter the two of them set out for Memphis to find employment. In 1987 he retired from Buckeye Cellulose and they moved to a home Denny built on the Tennessee River in Decatur County. In 1997 things came full circle as Denny and Bernice moved back to the family farm in Chester County.

Denny was a born again Christian having been saved and baptized in the 1960’s at Woodlawn Terrace Baptist Church in Memphis. He had a passion for coaching and spent many years at both Woodlawn Baptist Academy and Frayser Assembly coaching primarily high school football and basketball. He had one undefeated football team and was so proud to have won two state championships in basketball. His players were special to him to the end.

Besides coaching and watching sports his interests included his family, fishing and making sure his yard was immaculately manicured.

Mr. Maness is survived by his wife, Bernice, two children Pam Mattingly of Memphis, Phil (Debbie) Maness of Cordova, a sister, Faye (Bill) Pipkin and 3 brothers, Ravon (Sarah), Billy (Linda) and Garry (Jane). Finally, he loved and cherished the 4 grandchildren, Angela Russell of Arlington, Paul Briggs of Memphis, Andrew Maness of Memphis and Austin Maness of Memphis and 2 great-grandchildren, Konnor Gately of Arlington and Cloe Briggs of California.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Millard and Wilma Maness and a sister, Elsie Smith.
