Edward Earl "Tubby" Mathis

September 28, 1932 — June 23, 2018

Edward Earl Mathis was born September 28th, 1932 in Wayne County, TN but is better known by the nickname "Tubby" given to him by his grandmother Mathis shortly after his birth. Tubby was raised in the Phillips Chapel community by his parents, Ed and Lucille Lacher Mathis with sisters, Helen and Judy. He attended school in Waynesboro and graduated from Wayne County High in 1950. Shortly after graduation, he entered the U.S. Air Force where he served our country as an Aircraft mechanic during the Korean War. After returning from the war, along with several other young men in Wayne County, he began working for Western Electric as a telephone office installer throughout Kentucky and Tennessee. It was while working in Kentucky that Tubby met Patricia Ann Wood and they married on August 4th, 1956. Patty traveled with Tubby while he worked for Western until their children, Allen and Debbie began school. In time, he and Patty build their home on their farm on Phillips Chapel road in the Green River community close to where he was raised. Tubby retired from Western Electric in December of 1983 and busied himself with cattle farming and raising grandchildren. He served his Lord faithfully at Green River Baptist Church as a Sunday school teacher and Deacon. He served his community as a Gideon, a member of the American Legion and served several terms as a County Commissioner in addition to service on the County's Hospital Board.

Tubby was the son of the late Ed and Lucille Lacher Mathis. He is survived by his wife of over 61 years, Patty, his son, Lewis Allen Mathis and wife, Nancy and daughter, Deborah Mathis Davis all of Waynesboro. His sisters were the late Helen Dooley and Judy Ward also of Waynesboro.

Tubby's grandchildren are Lindsay Pope (husband, Bryan), Leah Skipworth (husband, Jeremy) and Katie Pierson of Waynesboro and Justin Davis of Florence, AL.

Tubby was also blessed with 8 great-grandchildren-Grace Ayers, Wesley and Ashley Davis, Jake and Ty Skipworth, Boston and Brandon Pope and Isaac Pierson and a host of nieces and nephews.

After an extended illness, Tubby went home to be with our Lord on June 23rd, 2018 at the age of 85. Funeral services will be June 25th, 2018 at 3 pm at Green River Baptist Church with Mike Kemper and Jay Clanton officiating with burial in the Phillips Cemetery. Shackelford Funeral Directors, Wayne County, directing. Pallbearers will be Shane Ward, Jason Ray, Donnie Carroll, Jeremy Skipworth, Bryan Pope and Justin Davis.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be given to the Butterfly Foundation.

Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord for they will rest from their labor for their deeds will follow them. To be absent from the body is to be at home with the Lord.
