Dr. Elizabeth Littlefield, age 74, went to be with her Lord and Savior on January 24, 2018. She was born November 1, 1943 to Robert and Lady Jane Dexter in Highland, Illinois. She grew up in Selmer, Tennessee. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma at Ole Miss and graduated from the University of Memphis with a degree in history, education and political science. She also received a master's degree in special education and a doctorate degree in educational administration and supervision from the University of Memphis.
She is survived by her husband Greg of Selmer, TN; her son Tim Littlefield and wife Angel of Houston, TX; her sister Mary Cooley and husband Ted of Houston, TX; a niece, Laura Phelan of Dallas, TX; her sister-in-law, Livy Sibley of Nashville, TN; her nephew, Josh Sibley of Atlanta, GA; and two grandchildren, Lacey and Keeley White of Houston, TX. Dr. Littlefield attended Love and Truth Church in Savannah, TN.
She taught special education at Selmer Elementary School. She was a career ladder evaluator for the State and an assistant principal at McNairy Central High School. She was promoted to special education supervisor for McNairy County Schools. In 1993, she became principal of Timber Springs Adolescent Center on the campus of Western Mental Health Institute (WMHI). She was promoted to superintendent in 1995. Dr. Littlefield was the first and only woman to hold the position of superintendent in the 124 year history of WMHI. Since her retirement in 2002, Dr. Littlefield has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Memphis and the University of Tennessee Martin. She has been active in volunteer organizations and provided a program for attention deficit students in the McNairy County Schools. Above all, Elizabeth loved the Lord and her family with all her heart.
