Elmer D. Seaton

Elmer D. Seaton was born October 2, 1933 in the Mud Creek community of McNairy County, the son of Elmer and Georgia Donaldson Seaton. When he was four years old his family moved to Adamsville where his father began a grocery store business on Main Street. After graduating from Adamsville High SchooI, Elmer D. attended Memphis State before entering the United States Army in December of 1953. He served in Japan and Korea and was honorably discharged in November of 1956. He returned to Adamsville where he lived the rest of his life. After returning, he first went to work with his brother Billy at Seaton Grocery Store. In 1964, Elmer D. became a Mail Carrier for the United States Postal Service. He faithfully carried the mail for over 35 years during which time he developed countless friendships with the families he served. For most of those years, each day as soon as the mail was delivered, he would go work on his and Billy's farm or in his garden.

In 1959, Mr. Seaton's life changed when he began actively attending First Baptist Church in Adamsville. It was there he met the love of his life, Geneva Kennedy Seaton. They were united in marriage a few months later on May 10, 1959. Not long thereafter he began teaching Sunday School and became a Deacon. One of his biggest priorities each week for the next 56 years was getting well prepared to teach his Sunday School class. Elmer D. was active in the National Rural Letter Carriers Association at both the state and national level. He served as President of the Association and Steward of the association at the state level. In addition to tending his garden he enjoyed reading books, working a cross word puzzle, or playing a game of dominoes. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Mr. Seaton was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Billy Seaton. He is survived by his wife Geneva Seaton; two sons, Richard Seaton of Washington, DC, and Ken Seaton and wife Amy of Adamsville; a daughter, Jennifer Cook and husband Michael of Memphis; seven grandchildren, Andy Seaton, Amelia Seaton, Alex Seaton, Whit Cook, Josh Cook, Phillip Cook, and Minor Cook Pipes.
