Mr. Elmer Thaxter Stewart, age 90 of Bolivar, Tennessee passed away Sunday evening, April 20, 2014 at Bolivar General Hospital.
A lifelong resident of Hardeman County, Mr. Stewart was born September 9, 1923 to the late Wilburn Elihu and Ruby Doyle Stewart. He served in the United States Army during World War II, and, on June 13, 1942, he was united in marriage to Lillie Pearl Stewart, who preceded him in death August 16, 2003. He worked at Harmon Automotive, retiring after 29 years. He was a member of Porter's Creek Baptist Church.
Mr. Stewart loved working with horses, mules and wagons, and he was a big St. Louis Cardinals fan. He particularly loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include six daughters, Jeanette Gladish of Jackson, Barbara Sipes of Bolivar, Judy Wiggins of Bolivar, Rita Treadway of Henderson, Connie Hannis and husband Jimmy of Bolivar, and Bonnie Sisco and husband Danny of Bolivar; three sons, Bobby Stewart and wife Ruthie of Middleton, Kenneth Stewart of Bolivar, and Jerry Stewart and wife Linda of Beech Bluff; four sisters, Linda Cranford of Bolivar, Ruth Hammons of Bolivar, Betty Stewart of Bolivar and Janie Shearin and husband Fred of Germantown; one brother, Murley Stewart of Bolivar; eighteen grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bob Stewart and W. E. Stewart, Jr.; and a sister, Dorothy Carter.
