GAYLE ELLINGTON
March 11, 1940 – August 19, 2013
Mifflin, TN: Gayle Ellington, age 73 passed away Monday, August 19, 2013 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital.
He was born and reared in Madison County the son of the late Raymond and Acquilla Hendrix Ellington. He attended Madison County Schools and graduated Southside High School in 1958 where he played football for the Hawks. He entered the United States Air Force in 1958 and retired from the service in 1963.
He married Rachel Williams in 1963 and they made their home in the Mifflin Community. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on March 23, 2013.
Mr. Ellington worked for the Tennessee Department of Transportation until his retirement in 2002. He attended Mifflin Baptist Church.
He enjoyed attending his grandkids sporting events and supporting them and after retiring he loved to do woodwork with his best friend, Buddy Stovall.
He is survived by his wife, Rachel Williams Ellington; two daughters, Sherry Utley (Greg) of Huntsville, Alabama and Marla Davidson (Kevin) of Henderson, Tennessee. He is also survived by his pride and joy, his grandchildren, whom he loved very much, Brooklynn Davidson, Kendyl Davidson, Connor Utley and Sarah Utley; one brother, Alvin Ellington (Shirley) of Five Points and two sisters, Sonja Hamm (Kenneth) of Lexington and Darla Gaines (Gene) of Jackson.
He had many special people helping take care of him during his battle with cancer including his favorite sister-in-law, Margie McGhee, brother-in-law, Dwayne Williams and cousins, Norman Sanders and Elanie Parker and dear friend, Anita “Pickle” Lambert.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bufford Ellington.
Funeral services will be Thursday, 3:00 PM, August 22, 2013 at Mifflin Baptist Church, Mifflin, Tennessee, with Bro. Pete Criner, Bro. Larry Blankenship, Bro. Ronnie Geary and Bro. Bobby McCord officiating and burial will follow with Military Honors in Mifflin Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel, Wednesday, August 21, 2013 beginning at 5:00 PM and Thursday from 12:00 Noon until 3:00 PM at the Church.
