Hershel Shands was born on February 19, 1931, the son of the late William Hermon and Caroline Barrier Shands. On June 29, 1963, he was united in marriage to Virginia Nell Brown, who preceded him in death on October 19, 2004.
Mr. Shands was a resident of the Walnut Grove Community for over seventy five years. He was employed for thirty two years with the Rogers Group Quarry in Tuscumbia, Alabama, he also worked for River Heights Lumber Company in Crump, Tennessee, and a packing house in Florence, Alabama. He was a community volunteer and he loved to farm; and he was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather.
Mr. Shands departed this life on December 16, 2013 at the age of 82 years, 9 months and 27 days.
He is survived by four daughters, Wanda G. Shands, Glenda F. Shands Ward and Betty L. Shands Linville, all of Savannah, Tennessee, and Mary L. Shands of Bolivar, Tennessee; six grandchildren, Thomas Ward, Jenni Ward, Justin Linville, Juliana Linville, Vivian Linville and Ashley Shands; three great-grandchildren, Austin Ward, Gabriel Ward and Danica Ward; and a niece, Ann Shands Cossey .
In addition to his parents and his wife, Virginia, he was preceded in death by one sister, Sara Madeline Shands and one brother, Henry Edward Shands; three half-sisters, Beulah Shands Fox, Ethal Hendon and Lula Gobbell and one half-brother, Coleman Shands.
