Hubert Barnes

Hubert Barnes was born June 23, 1933 in McNairy County, TN the son of the late Edgar and Maggie Willis Barnes.

He was united in marriage to Jeanette Dicks on June 6, 1953.

Mr. Barnes was a graduate of Ramer High School. In December of 1953, he entered into the service of the United States Army, and was discharged as a Private First Class in December of 1955, having served 18 months in Germany. Mr. Barnes worked as a bus driver for the Memphis Transit Authority for over 10 years, then operated a Jackson Cookies route in Memphis for 18 years. He was best known as the former owner and operator of Harlow's Donuts and the H & J Cafe in Selmer. Mr. Barnes enjoyed gardening, cooking, and fishing. He loved children and wildlife; he could win the heart of a child and the trust of animals. Mr. Barnes was a former Deacon for Gravel Hill Baptist Church, and was presently a member of Falcon Baptist Church in Selmer.

Mr. Barnes departed this life on September 29, 2013 in Guys, Tennessee at the age of 80 Years, 3 Months, 6 Days. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jeanette (Dicks) Barnes of Guys, TN; a daughter, Kathy Chadwick and husband David of Horn Lake, MS; three great-grandchildren: Tyler Rogers and wife Krystin, Justin Wilson, and Austin Rivers; a great-great-grandchild, Riley Rogers; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Barnes was preceded in death by a sister, Pearl Wilson, and three brothers: James Warren Barnes, George Barnes, and Wilburn Barnes.

Services will be held on October 1, 2013 at 3:00 PM at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Selmer, Tennessee, with George Kyle and Jay Houston officiating. Burial will follow in the Falcon Cemetery at Selmer, Tennessee. Memorial contributions may be made to Falcon Baptist Church in Selmer.
