JOY YATES MANESS

Henderson: Joy Yates Maness, age 77, passed away October 23, 2017 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital.

She was born June 2, 1940 in Henderson County the daughter of Lois White Yates and the late Olvie Thomas Yates. She graduated from Lexington High School in 1958, attended UT Martin two years and graduated from the University of Tennessee Knoxville in 1962 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics. She married Harold Wayne Maness in 1964. She was Home Economist for Lexington Electric System and later for the Jackson Electric Authority. She and Mr. Maness owned and operated Henderson Pharmacy for over thirty years, retiring in 2004.

She was an avid reader, gardener, seamstress, and supported all University of Tennessee sports. She and Harold raised horses. She loved to ride and had raised cows and showed cattle in 4-H shows during high school and had received many state 4-H awards. They enjoyed area horse shows and attended the celebration at Shelbyville many times. She enjoyed activities with her local bridge club and enjoyed hosting them in her home. She attended the Henderson Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her father Olvie Thomas Yates and her husband Harold Maness in 2012.

Mrs. Maness is survived by her mother, Lois White Yates of Lexington; two daughters, Carla Becker and husband Andrew of Richmond, VA and Cathy Maples and husband Greg of Henderson, a sister Janice Yates Patterson and husband Tommy of Luray, and five grandchildren; Macy Maples, Max Maples, Madlyn Maples, Rachel Becker, and Megan Becker.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Thursday at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel with Roy Sharp, Billy Smith, and Charlie Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Chester County Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Shackelford – Casey Chapel from 5:00 PM until 8:00 pm Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to Mid-South Youth Camp, c/o Freed Hardeman University, 158 East Main Street, Henderson, Tennessee 38340.
