LESTER H. STEWART
Henderson, TN: Lester Hershel Stewart, age 82 passed away Sunday morning August 4, 2013 at Decatur-Morgan Hospital in Decatur, Alabama.
He was born and reared in Cookeville, TN the son of the late William Hershel and Edna E. Lewis Stewart. He graduated from high school in Corunna, Michigan. He attended Tennessee Tech at Cookeville and in 1954 married Ruth Bilbrey.
Mr. Stewart began his military career in the U. S. Navy in 1952 and served a combined service of 20 years in the Navy and the Air Force retiring in 1972. After his retirement they moved to Henderson where he attended Freed- Hardeman University and graduated in 1976 with a degree in education. He then taught 6th grade in the Chester County school system until his second retirement.
He had served as an elder at the Colonial Heights Church of Christ in Virginia and also served as a deacon, church treasurer, and elder at the Estes Church of Christ.
He was an accomplished carpenter and enjoyed wood working, doing several projects around the neighborhood and having built a few homes of his own.
After his retirement he enjoyed RV traveling and spending time at his second home at Gulf Shores, Alabama. He and Ruth spent many months working with Churches of Christ Disaster Relief out of the Creekwood Church of Christ at Mobile, AL following Hurricane Katrina.
He married Barbara Stephens Wilson 10/10/2010 and they made their home at Gulf Shores and Courtland, Alabama.
He is survived by his wife Barbara Wilson Stewart of Moulton, AL and two sons; Mark Stewart and wife Diane of Henderson and Steve Stewart and wife Louise of Chicago, IL, three step children; Dean Wilson, Robert Wilson and Gail Birge all of Alabama, three grandchildren and four step grandchildren, and one great grandson and three step great grandchildren. He has two brothers Clarence Stewart of Cookeville and Kenneth Stewart of Corunna, MI and a sister Fern VanLuren of MI. .
He was preceded in death by his first wife Ruth Bilbrey Stewart in 2007, a son Paul Michael Stewart in 1973, a daughter-in-law Debbie Stewart in 1998 and three sisters, Viola Harmon, Imogene Boles and Florence Smith and a brother, Roy Stewart.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday at the Estes Church of Christ with Roy Sharp, Mark Blackwelder and Jesse Robertson officiating and burial to follow at the Estes Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Shackelford – Casey Chapel from 5 PM Tuesday until 9 PM and Wednesday from 9 AM until 11 AM at the Estes church building.
