Martha Jane Wilkerson was born on September 21, 1920, in Hardin County to the late William Robert and Jinney Caroline Wilkerson.
Miss Wilkerson was baptized at the old Hopewell Baptist Church in Savannah, Tennessee. She worked for the Brown Shoe Company in Savannah, Tennessee from 1946 until she retired in 1982. Her job was to glue the leather from the upper part of the shoe to underneath the shoe in preparation for the sole. She was a wonderful cook and housekeeper, you could eat off her floor! Her life was all about her family, her nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She loved making quilts and collecting old glassware, family photos, and memorabilia. She cared for her parents and for her sisters, sacrificing a life of her own to care for her entire family.
Miss Wilkerson departed this life on October 19, 2013 at the Jackson Madison County General Hospital at the age of 93 years and 28 days.
She is survived by a sister, Jinney Thrasher and her husband, J.C. She also leaves numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six siblings, William Floyd Wilkerson, Rhoda Ethel Brewington, Ester Lee Wilkerson, Rose Ada Harrison, John Robert Wilkerson, and Otis Wilkerson.
