Max Gerald Hurst

MAX HURST
Henderson, TN: Max Gerald Hurst age 86, passed away on December 3, 2017, at the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital after a short illness. Funeral services will be at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel, Henderson, on Friday 1:00 PM with Dr. Paul Scheirer officiating. Burial will follow at Cave Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Thursday at Casey Chapel.
He was born November 7, 1931, near Robinson Store and Gin, now Masseyville, the son of the late Horace G. and Lessie Robinson Hurst. His family moved to Henderson in 1944, the residence of the Hurst till the present time. He graduated from Chester County High School in 1949, and then went to the University of Tennessee pursuing a career in engineering. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Army in 1955 and served for the most part of 2 years with the the Combat Engineering Battalion in Korea.
After his discharge he began his civilian career at McDonald-Douglas Aircraft in St. Louis, and then worked in the Army Corps of Engineers, then with the Air Force Communications Service, and finally to the Defense Mapping Agency in 1969 in St. Louis for the last 22 years, retiring in 1990, having served with the Department of Defense for over 30 years.
Mr. Hurst moved back to Henderson in 1990 and became an active member of the First United Methodist Church, and served on the Building Committee as the church expanded with the Christian Life Center. He managed the financial issues related to property in Oklahoma for the church.
He was dedicated to the outdoors, particularly enjoying hunting quail with his partners and his birddogs. He loved fishing and watersports, earned the Coast Guard rank of Captain, and “ran the Tennessee River” in 2002 with his daughter on their yacht.
His hobbies were woodworking and building and flying model aircraft, helicopters, and gliders, with the local “Magic Valley Air Force” for 27 years. He participated as treasurer, president, and contest director.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years Nancy, his daughter Toni-Gina Antionette of Alpharetta, Georgia, and three nephews, Keith, Lynn, and Mark Roland, also of Georgia.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Martha Hurst Rowland.
