Montie Billie Collie

May 23, 1926 — April 15, 2015

Montie Billie Collie was born on May 23, 1926 in Clifton, Tennessee and passed away on April 15, 2015. His mother was Lena Wilbanks Collie, a housewife and his father was George Collie, a carpenter. Montie had two brothers, David and Joe. David died in 1982 and is buried at Mt. Carmel Cemetery and Joe Collie passed away couple of years ago after a short illness. Joe is buried in the National Cemetery in Pegram outside Nashville. Montie had one sister, Mildred Northcutt Harrell. He called her "sister"...She passed away in Savannah in 2006 and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Waynesboro next to her husband Guymon Northcutt.

Montie joined the Navy at the tender age of 17. As the war raged on in Germany and the Pacific. He volunteered for the Navy in January 1943 and was trained as a pharmacist mate and combat medic and worked in the surgery unit on board the USS Independence. When World War II was over, Montie worked as a painter and lived in Florence, Alabama most of his life and was caregiver for his mother. He moved to Orlando, Florida (with "sister") for a short period and then lived in Waynesboro for the last 7 years. He was a member of American Legion Post 254 in Collinwood. Montie was an avid reader and a die-hard Atlanta Braves fan.

Montie has been blessed to have reunited with his son Montie Junior after many years of separation. He was so proud of him and his family. He would talk about Montie Junior everyday, even in the years before they were reunited. Over the last few years Montie and Montie Junior have had a great relationship and have made up for the lost time together. Montie is survived by his son, Montie Junior and his wife Olga who live in Mt. Home, Texas, a daughter, Tamara Casares and her husband Jason who live in Houston, Texas, granddaughter, Amanda Patterson Asher who lives in Boerne, Texas, a grandson, Peyton Montie Asher and twin granddaughters, Ryssa and Brooke Asher. He was preceded in death by Montie Junior's son, Shane Sterling Patterson. Other grandchildren are Justin, Courtney, and Tammy Casares.

Montie is survived by nephews and nieces, David Collie, Brenda Collie Rose, Steve Collie, Mark Collie, Jon Collie, Mike Northcutt, Phyllis Northcutt Long, Sandy Northcutt Gibb, DeeAnna McDonald, and many great nephews and great nieces. He is also survived by a longtime childhood friend from Clifton, Joanne Breaux who resides in Spartanburg, SC. They've stayed in touch as friends do for almost 80 years.

Services will be Friday, April 17, 2015 at 1:00 PM at Shackelford Funeral Directors Chapel in Waynesboro, Tennessee, with Mitchell L. Skelton officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery near Clifton, Tennessee with Shackelford Funeral Directors in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be Friday from 10:00 am until service time at the funeral home. Family request in lieu of flowers, donations be given to:
