OPAL M. GOODWIN

Annie Opal Massengill Goodwin, age 90 passed away Thursday May 1, 2014 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center in Wilmington, NC.
Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Tuesday May 6, 2014 at Shackelford Funeral Directors –Johnson Chapel with Dr. Mark Howard of Jackson officiating, music provided by Sandra Goodwin and Becky Howard with burial to follow in Cabo Cemetery in Chester County.
She was born August 9, 1923 in McNairy County and grew up in Enville, the daughter of the late Cordie Thomas and Vonnie Berrow Newman Massengill. She graduated from Chester County High School in 1941 and married Robert Lyman Goodwin December 27, 1941. They made their home in Enville and then moved to Henderson in 1955. Lyman died December 20, 1997. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and homemaker.
She worked in the office at the shirt factory, the Ladies Fashion Shop and Don’s Grocery where everyone enjoyed her fried apple and peach pies.
She had been a member of the Town and Country Home Demonstration Club and served as club secretary, participating in the Women’s Dress Revue and won many ribbons for her baked and canned goods in the Madison and Chester County fairs.
Her hobbies were cooking, baking, sewing, crocheting and growing plants and flowers.
She had been an active member of the Enville Baptist Church since 1950 and participated in the ladies' ministry and served many years in the church kitchen providing food for many social events.
Since her stroke in July, 1998 her daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Steve have been her caregivers. They have lived in SC, AL, TN and NC. Mrs. Goodwin has made many friends in all of these states.
She is survived by a daughter, Beverly Ann Hopkins (Steve) of Leland, NC; a son, Wilbur Lyman Goodwin (Janie) of Columbia, SC; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Goodwin Meetze (John) of Chapin, SC and Stephanie Goodwin Baird of Atlanta, GA; three great grandchildren, John Allen Meetze, Melissa Meetze and Matthew Meetze all of Chapin, SC; two sister-in-laws, Maye Goodwin of Enville and Loulean Goodwin of Henderson and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Goodwin was preceded in death by three brothers, Cratus Massengill, Kenneth Massengill and Earlie Massengill; two sisters, Ollie Bateman and Muriel Harwell and a daughter-in-law, Barbara McMillan Goodwin.
