Phinis H. McMahan was born November 27, 1914 in Hardeman County, TN the son of the late John T. and Mary Loudella Moore McMahan.
He was united in marriage to Marie Teague on December 21, 1946. Mrs. McMahan preceded him in death on June 8, 2004, following 57 years of marriage.
Mr. McMahan worked as a farmer and blacksmith. He also operated a sorghum mill, taking his mill to area farms to produce sorghum for the public. He also enjoyed raising a garden and sharing his produce with others. Mr. McMahan was a charter member of Hatchie Missionary Baptist Church, and was serving as a Deacon at the time of his death. He was honored in 2007 with a plaque commerating 75 years of faithful service to the Church. Mr. McMahan was a United States Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.
Mr. McMahan departed this life on July 23, 2013 in Selmer, Tennessee at the age of 98 Years, 7 Months, 26 Days. He is survived by a daughter, Maudie L. Newman and husband Robert of Selmer, TN; three grandchildren: Chris Lacefield and wife Jeannie of Hornsby, TN, Angela Lacefield of Hornsby, TN, and Jason Lacefield of Hornsby, TN; nine great-grandchildren: Denese Lacefield, Madeline Lacefield, Haley Lacefield, Ryver Lacefield, Jasmine Lacefield, Autumn Woods, Nicholas Beauregard, Jessica Beauregard, and Miguel Fielder, all of Hornsby, TN; a sister, Bessie Hodge of Petersburg, TN; a brother, Orville McMahan of Hornsby, TN; several nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. McMahan was preceded in death by a sister, Daisy Kennedy; and six brothers: Peyton McMahan, Aubrey McMahan, J. C. McMahan, Walter McMahan, Andrew McMahan, and J. T. McMahan.
