RICHARD LEATH

Finger, TN: James Richard Leath age 92 passed away Thursday morning November 27, 2014 at the Henderson Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born May 14, 1922 on the Leath farm on Leath Lane in Chester County and has lived on the same farm all of his life. He was the son of the late John Hardy and Minta Pauline Tedford Leath. He attended school at Finger. He farmed on the Leath farm all of his life. As of November 25th on this year the farm had been in the Leath family 109 years. He lived a short time in Indiana where he worked for Lowes Lumber Company.

Mr. Leath was well known for cooking whole hog-Bar-B-Que. He got his start working with his father at the annual Finger Bar-B-Que and had cooked Bar-B-Que in and around Chester County for over 70 years. He was the Chief Chef for the annual Chester County Bar-B-Que Festival for over 20 years. His expertise in whole hog Bar-B-Que has been featured in several area magazines as well as the Chester County Independent.

Mr. Leath took great pride in having the honor of being appointed by the Chester County Election Commission to serve the voters of Chester County as a poll official on Election Day at the Harmony precinct, as well as during the early vote at the Chester County Court House. Having worked for the Commission up until just prior to this past election, Mr. Leath was the oldest poll official serving.

Richard loved Bluegrass music and particularly was a fan of Bluegrass legend Bill Monroe.

Mr. Leath was a member of the Refuge Church of Christ.

He is survived by two brothers; Charles Leath of Finger and Billy Leath of Cookeville; two sisters, Jennie Courtney of Greenwell Springs, LA and Joyce Kammer of San Diego, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Roy Leath and three sisters, Johnnie Longmire, Mary Braly and Virginia Ann Day.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Sunday at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel with Ben Flatt and Jeff Leath officiating and burial will follow in Finger Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Casey Chapel 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Saturday.
