Robert Brooks Ingraham
Another WWII Veteran died last week. Robert Brooks Ingraham, age 93, of Savannah, died Thursday, February 15, 2018.
Bob was born in Claremont, New Hampshire on April 11, 1924. He joined the U. S. Navy at seventeen and served aboard the U.S.S. Farquhar Destroyer Escort until the end of the war. Sailing from South America to Cape Town to England, he survived the war while maintaining the diesel engines aboard ship.
He married Winifred Evelyn Blodgett on November 10, 1945 in Claremont, N. H. as the war was ending. The newly- weds spent their honeymoon on a train heading back to Green Cove, Florida where he awaited his discharge.
Bob enjoyed fishing and camping with his 1967 Chevy truck and camper. Being a "depression baby" he could fix anything. He and "Winnie" raised three children while living in Vermont. Bob sold heavy equipment for several companies and would carry a set of work clothes in order to climb under machinery to fix a problem for his customer on site when needed.
When Bob got tired of shoveling snow off the roof in Vermont, he moved to Savannah in 1978 and built his own log cabin single handedly. Never one to really retire, he worked for several businesses in the community as onsite custodian, bringing his "get it done" and "fix it right" skills with him. Bob was well respected by all for his work ethic and honest manner.
Bob lost his only son, Alan Ingraham when Alan was just 33. Later, his youngest, daughter, Beth Ingraham, died at age 43. His beloved wife, Winnie, left him in 2009. Mr. Bob continued to live in the cabin he build with his wife until he was 90 years old.
He will be greatly missed by his daughter, Martha I. Marshall and her husband, Terry who reside in the family cabin out in Cerro Gordo. He is survived by his grandson Kevin Ingraham of Bennington, Vt. and his granddaughter, Lori Ingraham Branda, her husband Mark and Great grandson, Nathaniel, all of Maine.
The family asks that gifts/contributions be made to Hardin Home in Savannah in Mr. Bob's name.
May God continue to bless America and its fighting men and women.
