Agnes Vincent Johnson

October 2, 1933 — April 14, 2020

Agnes Ophelia Vincent Johnson passed away Tuesday night peacefully at home with family. She was born October 2,1933 in Bolivar, TN to Maurice Olan (Biggie) and Rubye Smalley Vincent.

Aggie attended schools in Bolivar and graduated from Central High School in 1951. She continued her education at what is now known as the University of Memphis. By the time Agnes graduated, she had over 10 degrees including: home ec, accounting, book keeping, and office management. Later she went back to school to obtain her teaching license.

In 1955 the April after graduating college, Agnes married W. Jeryl Johnson and took a job at MLG&W. While they lived in Memphis their first born daughter Jana Louise Johnson was born in 1956. The family of 3 then had to move to Texas for Jeryl’s job as manager of a trucking company dealing with truck routes. In 1959, the family welcomed their second born, Carey Maurice (Johnny). Over the next 10 years the family would move 20 times for Jeryl’s job. In 1969 the family found themselves back in Texas where Agnes gave birth to their last child, Jennifer Ann. After 2 more moves Agnes would once again end up in her beloved hometown of Bolivar with her family until she died.

In 1976, Agnes and Jeryl bought a store called Bryant’s Shoe Shop. A few years later it became Johnson’s Family Footwear. The store was known for shoes, boots, hunting gear, t-shirts, trophies, sports equipment, and even shoe repair. By owning the store 19 years they made many friends in our wonderful community.

Faith was important to Agnes. She was a member to a Baptist Church in any city she was living in, including being a member of First Baptist Church Bolivar. She tried to be a Sunday school teacher wherever the Lord led her. She raised her children to have strong Christian beliefs, to love God, Jesus, children, and people in general. She taught her children to have compassion for others that don’t have as much. She ended up with 2 teachers and a preacher. She was proud of that fact.

These are a few of her family’s fond memories. Aggie was known for her journaling of day’s events and even sending detailed letters to her young granddaughters. She crocheted, and she had the ability to take a piece of material and make it into a masterpiece with a sewing machine. She had a love of reading the Bible but also almost any other book she could get ahold of. She once told her oldest granddaughter that she required an ice-cream cone every night.

She is survived by her baby daughter and husband, Jennifer J. Lowe and Todd N. Lowe of Bolivar, TN; a daughter-in-law Tina Graves Johnson of Jackson, TN; granddaughters, Hillary E. and Brittney A. Johnson of Jackson, TN; grandson, Jon N. Lowe of Bolivar, TN; a sister and brother-in-law Martha Vincent Laney (Joel) of Davidson, NC ; and many many other Smalley, Vincent, Johnson, and Quinn cousins, nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents Maurice Olan (Biggie) and Rubye Smalley Vincent; her husband, William Jeryl Johnson; her son, Rev. Carey Maurice (Johnny) Johnson; her daughter, Jana Louise Johnson; her sister, Pat Louise Vincent; her in-laws, Betty and Carey Johnson, and Steve and Amelia Quinn. Memorial donations in her name may be sent to LeBonheur Children's Medical Center or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
