Barbara Carter Sammons

Barbara Ann Carter Sammons, age 75 of Nashville, TN, formerly of Bolivar, TN, departed this life Tuesday, March 10, 2020.

Barbara was born Wednesday, May 31, 1944 in Hereford, TX to the late Corporal Vernon Wesley Carter, Jr and Bessie Lillian Harvell Carter. Saturday, July 1, 1966, she was united in marriage to the late David Winston Sammons. She is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Sammons of Nashville, and grandchildren, Madison Wissert and Alexander Wissert, both of Nashville. Cousins: Manon Stephenson (Steve) of Nashville, TN, Ron DeBerry (Paula) of Gallatin, TN, Rick Cofer (Nancy) of Altus, OK, and Regina Bolt (Ralph) of Waukesha, WI.

She grew up in Bolivar, TN where she worked at the family owned Carter’s Liberty Supermarket. She attended First Baptist Church and graduated from Central High School in 1962 to go on to University of Tennessee, Martin. She lived in St. Louis, Washington D.C., Lubbock, TX, New York City, and Nashville. Her careers included teaching, insurance & pension administration before starting at Vanderbilt University Medical Center as an Administrative Assistant for several physicians in the Department of Radiology from which she retired after 25 years. She enjoyed retirement, spending time with her daughter and grandchildren, and traveling.

She moved to Nashville in 1977, joining Woodmont Baptist Church where she helped found the Singles program in the early 1980’s and was a member of the choir. She joined Forest Hills Baptist Church in 1993 and served on the flower committee, Dolls for Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, Loaves and Fishes and was a member of the choir.

Graveside service will be held at Union Cemetery in Bolivar, TN on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 1 pm. A Celebration of Life will be held at Forest Hills Baptist Church in Nashville, TN on Saturday, April 4, 2020. Visitation will begin at 12:30 pm with a service to follow at 2 pm.

The family would prefer flowers be sent to the Celebration of Life on April 4 rather than the Graveside on March 14.
