    Bertis M. Blackburn

    March 15, 1932 - January 5, 2021

    Bertis M. "Bert" Blackburn, 88, passed away early Tuesday morning, January 5, 2021 at AHC Healthcare Center in Selmer. Mr. Blackburn was born March 15, 1932 to John Wesley and Alpha Jane King Blackburn in the Medon/Toone area. He served his country as an Airman 1st Class, in the US Air Force, during the Korean War. He helped to move the Declaration of Independence from the Library of Congress to the Archives In Washington DC in 1952. Following his service, he lived in Tampa, FL for 40 years, working as a security guard in various businesses, before returning to Holly Springs, MS. He retired as a police officer in Aberdeen, MS. At eight years old he began playing guitar and played in various bands, including Bertha Vaughan and the Rhythm Ranch Boys and with Ramsey Kearney. He was Baptist in belief and a member of the VFW and DAV. About a year ago, Mr. Blackburn had returned to Selmer to be close to family. He leaves 2 daughters and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Eva Robins Blackburn who died July 13, 2011; two brothers and two sisters, and a daughter. Private services will be held at a later date.
