Bettye Jo Steed

Henderson, TN: Bettye Jo Scott Steed age 89 passed away December 2, 2019 at her home.
She was born July 25, 1930 in Bemis, TN the daughter of the late Homer E. and Bertha Vaughn Scott. She graduated from J.B. Young High School in 1949 and was an excellent basketball player. She attended Union University. She married Billy Burnett ‘Bill’ Steed October 14, 1951. They made their home in Henderson. She worked at Chester Manufacturing as an inspector for ten years. She was a Girl Scout Leader and had served as treasurer of the Henderson Elks Auxiliary. She then returned home to be a domestic engineer.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Henderson where she enjoyed helping with Vacation Bible School. She enjoyed playing Canasta with her Canasta Club partners. When she was young she was a talented basketball player and has always enjoyed watching basketball games on TV especially the Memphis Tigers.
Mr. Steed died in 2014. They were married 62 1/2 years.
Mrs. Steed is survived by two daughters, Lorna Thompson (Tony) and Dianne Chappell all of Henderson; three grandchildren, Aletha Thompson Glover (Bobby), Emily Kilzer O’Quin (Alan) and Thomas B. Winbush (Brandi); and seven great grandchildren, Abbie Glover, Tyler Scott Glover, Emma-Davis O’Quin, Mary-Alan O’Quin, Whit O’Quin, Shelby Winbush and Trey Winbush; and two special caregivers Susan Easley and Darlene Priddy.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a sister, Jeanette Scott.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, December 7th at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Crook Avenue with Ken Kitchen officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery at Memphis at 2:00 PM with Alan O’Quin officiating.
The family will receive friends at Crook Avenue beginning at 10:00 AM until 11:00AM Saturday.
