Finger, TN: Mr. RD Smith, age 91, passed away Monday night at his home.
He was born in Enville, TN October 15, 1930 son of the late Richard David and Annie Rickman Smith. He grew up in Milledgeville.
He married Johnnie Arlene Weaver in 1950 and they had 3 sons. She preceded him in death on November 14, 2003. He joined the US Army in December 1952 and served 2 years in Korea during the Korean War. In his early years he worked as a surveyor. He later served in law enforcement and most notably served as Chester County Deputy Sheriff and then Sheriff from 1970-1976. He later worked for the city of Henderson Waste Management.
He liked to go on trips, going to auctions, raising donkeys, goats, chickens, and peacocks. He was an outdoor sportsman. He had a film career, serving as the Sheriff who beat Buford Pusser in election in Walking Tall: The Final Chapter.
He married Pauline Climer January 26, 2007 and they made their home in Finger.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline Smith; four sons, Jeffery Smith (Amanda) of Greenfield, TN, Dennis Climer (Kim) of Reagan, Tony Climer (Debbie) of Finger, and Teddy Climer (Karen) of Reagan; two brothers, Max Smith (Margie) of Water Valley, MS, and Danny Smith (Susie) of Finger; daughter-in-law and caregiver Patsy Smith; twelve grandchildren, Darla Rogers, Tracy Toth, Hollie Smith, Timothy Smith, Hailey Thomas, Emilee Thomas, Dalton Smith, Callie Hayes, Blake Climer, Jennifer Scudder, Josh Climer, and Kaegan Moody; seventeen great grandchildren, Riley Griswell, Evan Brunning, Kyra Brunning, Lacey Harper, Ethan Harper, Autumn Toth, London Toth, Lilie Thomas, Brice Thomas, Carter Thomas, Crosby Thomas, Baker Moody, Shelly Climer, Lexie Climer, Xander Climer, Jacob Anderson, and Elijah Anderson; and great-great grandchild, Raelyn Magee.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, David Smith and Johnny Smith; two brothers, Otral Smith and Bill Smith; a sister, Glenda Robinson; and two great grandchildren, Raven Griswell and Nicole Griswell.
Funeral services will be Thursday October 28th at 11:00 AM at Shackelford Funeral Directors - Crook Avenue Chapel with Glenn Harris officiating. Burial will follow in Old Friendship Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Crook Avenue from 5 PM until 8 PM Wednesday October 27th.
