Clara Clifton, 94, of Bolivar, passed away Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at Pine Meadows Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Bolivar.
She was the widow of George Vaughan, who died at the age of 36 on July 10, 1953 and later married Marcus Clifton, who died at the age of 55 on March 21, 1974. She worked as a nurse since 1955, working one of her last jobs with Dr. Pakkala. She was born Sunday, November 1, 1925 in Hardeman County, daughter of the late Taylor and Cerro Shinault Callahan and lived her entire life here. She was raised by her grandmother, Nanny Callahan, after the untimely death of her mother when Clara was only 9 weeks old. She was well known in the community for her cooking skills, especially at funerals, with favorites being pound cake, green beans and banana pudding. She loved her church family at Bolivar First Baptist Church, her Lord, and especially her only child, Janice, whom she called her 'angel'.
She is survived by her daughter, Janice Vaughan of Bolivar and numerous cousins.
Janice wishes to thank the staff and nurses at Pine Meadows Healthcare for all they did in caring for Mrs. Clara.
Memorial contributions in her name may be sent to the Bolivar First Baptist Church or to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org/donate).
