Clara King Leathers

Clara King Leathers, 93, of Toone, departed this life Saturday morning, December 30, 2017 at Pine Meadows Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Bolivar.

The widow of J. W. Leathers, who preceded her in death on August 11, 2016, she was a homemaker. She also had worked part time as a substitute teacher at Toone Elementary and as a cook at Hall-McNeil Store, and prior to her marriage, she worked at the Bemis Cotton Mill. She was born March 14, 1924 in the Teague Community, daughter of the late Joseph Cleveland King and Hettie Rebecca Elizebeth Hammers King and had lived in Toone since 1950. She married J. W. Leathers on May 5, 1946 in a fire station in Corinth, Mississippi and lived for a while in Sitka, when he worked for the arsenal, before moving back to this area. A 1943 graduate of Bolivar Central High School, she was on the basketball team and had enjoyed watching the sport ever since. Other hobbies included listening to gospel music, growing vegetables in her garden with her husband, working with flowers, canning and fishing. She was a member of Toone Baptist Church, formerly working with the GA's there.

Survivors include a son, Larry Joe Leathers and his wife, Bonnie, whom she considered as a daughter, of Toone; a granddaughter, Katy Mynatt (Randy) of Bolivar; and a great grandson whom she loved dearly, Hunter. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Opal Rogers and Lorraine Cox and 2 brothers, Travis Edward King (infant) and Curtis Owen King. The family requests memorial contributions in her name be made to the National Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org/donate) or the Toone Baptist Church.
