Darwyn Laws Rushing, Sr. 83
Mr. Rushing of Finger, TN passed from this world to the next on May 1, 2019. He was surrounded by family and loved ones at Jackson-Madison General Hospital.
He was born on August 13, 1935 in Whitthorne, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Floy Rushing, sister Eloise Ross and brother George Rushing. He was survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Marilyn Rushing and four children, Michelle Smith (OK) of Greenville, SC, Sonya Taylor of Bethel Springs, TN, Laws Rushing II (Stacey) of Charlotte, TN, and Dwayne Rushing of Finger, TN. He was beloved "Pop Pop" to grandchildren Zane & Ella Taylor, Rachel Averell, and River Belle Rushing.
He is also survived by his brother Frank Rushing (Debbie) of Jackson, TN.
Rushing was the Salutatorian of Clarksburg High School in 1953. He was a graduate of Freed-Hardeman College and received his Bachelors of Science from David Lipscomb College as well as post graduate study at East Tennessee State University. He served as an environmentalist for the Tennessee Health Department in Dresden, TN for 35 years in many roles including Director of the Weakley County Health Department.
He was preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Danny Averell and Derrick Taylor.
Mr. Rushing was a man of profound faith serving in various roles including Bible Teacher, Missions Board and Elder and was an active member of the Finger Church of Christ. He enjoyed bluegrass music, playing guitar, antiques, traveling, and time with family. He was known by friends and family for his character, humility and encouraging words.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Sunday at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Crook Avenue with a private committal service at Seller’s Hill Cemetery at Clarksburg, TN.
The family will receive friends at Crook Avenue 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Saturday evening and beginning at 12:00 Noon until 2:00 PM Sunday.
