Dexter Paul Brewer

Dexter Paul Brewer, 83, of Cypress Inn, TN died Sunday, January 11, 2015 at his residence. He was born April 22, 1931 in Wayne County, TN, the son of the late Charles Washington and Mamie Todd Brewer. In addition to his parents, Mr. Brewer was preceded in death by brothers, Fay Edwin Brewer and McArthur Brewer, sister, Jewell Ezell; brothers-in-law, Randolph Martin, David Daniel and Robert Ezell and son-in-law, Terry Whitten. He was united in marriage to Evelyn Sue Bratton on April 19, 1952 and she preceded him in death, March 2, 2012. Mr. Brewer began his working career in 1948 at Martin Stove and Range and remained there until he began working at Ford Motor Company in Sheffield in 1958. In 1964, Dexter and his brother, Fay opened Brewer's Bi-Rite in Collinwood. After purchasing his brothers share, he and his wife, Evelyn continued to operate the grocery until 1983. In 1975, he opened Brewer's Implement Company and managed that business until his retirement in 1990. After retiring, he returned to his family farm and continued his love of cattle farming, an operation that continued until his failing health. Mr. Brewer was a long time member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.

He is survived by daughters, Connie Whitten Lay and husband, Billy of Collinwood, TN and Kathy Daniel and husband, James of Cypress Inn, TN;
grandchildren, Tim Whitten and wife, Kim, Chris Whitten and wife, Alicia,
and Shelia Daniel, great-grandchildren, Blake, David and Daniel Whitten, 4 step-grandchildren, 8 step-great-grandchildren, 3 step-great-great- grandchildren; brothers, Carlin Brewer and wife, Peggy and Norris Brewer and wife, Kathryn and sisters, Nell Martin, Eva Kelley and husband, Franklin and Judy Daniel all of Iron City, TN; sisters-in-law, Lois Brewer of Iron City, TN and Sue Brewer of Collinwood, TN, nieces and nephews.

Services will be Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at 1:00 PM at Shackelford Funeral Directors Chapel, Collinwood, Tennessee, with Bob Johnson and Buck Howard officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Gardens, Collinwood, Tennessee with Shackelford Funeral Directors in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be Monday, January 12, 2015 from 4:30 pm to 9 pm and Tuesday, January 13, 2015 from 9 am to service time at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Randy Brewer, Charles Martin, Randy Bratton, Dennis Brewer, Greg Brewer, and Hank Brewer. Honorary pallbearers will be JC Daniel, Cleo Reed, Roger Stults, Sonny Bratton, Cotton Sanderson, Johnny Hensley, Charles Daniel, Babe Staggs, Steve Martin, Sherman Martin, and Darrell Brewer.
