Dorothy Stewart Kanto

May 19, 1942 — May 9, 2020

Dorothy J Kanto (nee Stewart) of Manassas, VA passed over into God's arms on May 9th. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, William E. Kanto, her parents George and Willie Bea Stewart, and her grandson, Aiden K Williams.

She is survived by her two daughters, Karen Watson and Lisa Jones (Bruce), her beloved grandchildren, Lauren, Jessica, Ashley, John and Madelyn, and one treasured great-grandson, James Dean Martin.

Dorothy was born in Alabama and raised in Counce TN with her siblings, George T Stewart (Patty), Danny Stewart (Cathy), Kay Price (Ronnie), Pamela Lambert and her beloved cousin, Carolyn Henderson.

Dorothy graduated from High School as salutatorian in 1960 and flew to Minnesota to become a flight attendant. After completing training she was told she was "too short" for the job, so on a whim she took a test for government service. Shortly thereafter she flew to Washington DC where she worked for the Department of Defense for several years until her marriage to Bill.

Once settled in Manassas, VA, Dorothy devoted her life to raising her children. She worked as a librarian at her daughters' elementary school until they graduated to middle school. She was a dedicated volunteer, involved with SERVE for decades where she made many good friends and served her community. Dorothy LOVED card games, particularly bridge, and was a club member since the 70's, where she made life-long friends.

Dorothy worshiped at Manassas Baptist Church and loved Sunday School and Bible study. She inherited her mother's cooking skills and she was always the first to cook a meal for anyone in need, which brought her joy.

Dorothy's end of life was overshadowed by the pandemic, however the love conveyed in the cards, letters and phone calls from her church, SERVE, bridge clubs and neighbors touched her heart. The visits from the Allen family, life long friends, were a blessing.

Our beloved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend will be deeply missed by us all until we join her in God's arms.
