Gene Varnell passed away in his sleep on April 13, 2020, at the age of 97 years, 7 months,and 26 days at the home of his daughter where he had been living for a number of years.
Mr. Varnell was born in Milan, Tennessee on August 18, 1922 to the late John Thomas and Lora Williams Varnell. They moved to Selmer when he was a young man. He graduated from Selmer High School in 1942 and went into the Army where he was an MP at the POW camp in Texas. He worked for Western State Hospital for a brief time then moved to Selmer to work at Brown Shoe Factory. He retired from Brown Shoe at the closing of the factory.
Other than his parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters, Maxine McCullar and Wilma Moore; brother, John Varnell , Jr.; his first wife, Shirley; second wife, Julia Brumley Varnell; special friend, Vance Roberts.
Gene loved God and going to church. He liked to play Rook, dominos, go for walks and tell jokes. Also affectionately known as candy man, Gene was a Godly man and touched a lot of people in a good way.
Left to honor his memory are his daughter, Martha Varnell Harris Steakley and husband Randy; grandson, Joshua Harris; great grandchildren, Lauraline, Ella and Ethan Harris all of Tampa Bay area of Florida.
