Hughie E. "Smitty" Smith departed this life on Wednesday, June 23, 2021, at the age of 95 years and 1 month. He was born in Chester County, Tennessee, on May 23, 1926, the son of the late Elvis Brodie and Romie Sidney Patterson Smith. On April 12, 1957, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Faye Rickman, who preceded him in death on January 8, 2013.
Hughie served under General Patton in the United States Army during World War II. He served from September 1943 until his honorable discharge on October 6, 1946. Hughie earned his associates degree in Radiology and was the Head of the Radiology Department at the Kennedy Veterans Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. He enjoyed golfing, gardening, fishing, boating, raising his grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was a member of Gideons International, Counce First Baptist Church and longtime Sunday School teacher.
Hughie is survived by his son, James Rickman Sullivan and his wife Freda of Oakland, Tennessee; grandchildren, Eric Rickman Sullivan and his wife Amy, Nathan Lee Sullivan and his wife Jill, and Jonathan Boe Sullivan and his wife Tracy; great grandchildren, Drew Smith Sullivan, Langston Thomas Sullivan, Matthew Boe Sullivan, Taylor Kay Sullivan, Tyler Daniel Sullivan, Callie Grace Sullivan, and John Michael Needham Sullivan; and Trouble, his adored puppy and trusted companion.
