J. R. Hames

Henderson: John Reynold (J.R.) Hames, age 93, passed away Saturday night, March 23, 2019 at the Henderson Health and Rehab.

J.R. was born and reared in Habersham County, Georgia, the son of the late John Reynold ‘Rennie’ and Sallie Etta English Hames. He went to school in Habersham County, at Clarksville, GA.

He operated a service station in Atlanta and married Patsy Davidson and lived in Atlanta until they moved to Henderson in 1972. He then operated the Lion Station at the corner of Main and Church Streets in Henderson. Then he operated his own auto mechanic shop from his home. Patsy died in February 1988. He drove a school bus for 20 years, working in the bus maintenance garage and also worked as a janitor for the Chester County School System retiring in 2005. He married Debra Scott in 1996 and they continued to make their home near the Hickory Corner Community. He had worked for C & H Bus Lines as a charter driver. He also transported vehicles for Guinn Brothers and more recently for Teague-Noles 45 Auto Mart. He was a member of the Estes Church of Christ.

Mr. Hames is survived by his wife; Debra Scott Hames, three sons; John Hames and wife Teresa and Landon Hames and wife Carol all of Henderson and Stuart Hames and wife Wendy of Knoxville and a daughter Jacquita Butler and husband Richy of Henderson, also a brother Church W. ‘Bill’ Hames of Roanoke, VA, seven grandchildren and three step grandchildren and four great grandchildren and one step great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, first wife Patsy Hames, a son Phillip Hames in 1987, a brother Robert Lee Hames and four sisters; Ethel Wells, Nan Morrison, Lou Emma Elsberry and Rachel Nichols.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Thursday at the Shackelford Funeral Directors Crook Avenue Chapel with John McCaskill and Roy Sharp officiating. Burial will follow in the Estes Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Crook Avenue Chapel from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM on Wednesday.
