Mr. Jerry Cumberland, age 72 of Middleton, Tennessee, departed this life Friday morning, September 8, 2017 at Bolivar General Hospital.
A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Mr. Cumberland was born Friday, March 30, 1945 to the late Clyde Cooper and Addie Mae Devore Cumberland. He graduated with the class of 1964 at Kingsbury High School, and on Friday, April 19, 1968 in Alamo, Tennessee, he was united in marriage to Mary Cumberland, who survives. He worked for the Memphis Fire Department for 25 years before retiring as a Lieutenant.
In 2004, he and his wife moved to Middleton, where he was a very active member of the Middleton United Methodist Church, taking on many duties and overseeing the Sunday School program. He was a volunteer fire fighter for the Saulsbury Fire Department as well as the North Haven Fire Department in Memphis.
Mr. Cumberland loved America and enjoyed participating in Civil War reenactments. He adored children and loved playing Santa for them. He also enjoyed crafting things in his shop at home. Above all, he loved the Lord and spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife of 49 years, survivors include his children, David Corey Cumberland and wife Belinda of Selmer, Elise Cumberland of Oakland, California, and Robert Keith Cumberland and wife Jessie of Yulee, Florida; sister, June Wells of DeSoto County, Mississippi; grandchildren, Jennifer Cumberland of Palm City, Florida, Ricky Cumberland and wife Jennifer of Yulee, Florida, Dylan Cumberland of Yulee, Florida, Brittany Cumberland of Fernandina Beach, Florida, Lizzie McSwain and husband Chad of Fernandina Beach, Florida, Cooper Cumberland of Selmer, Addie Cumberland of Selmer, Amber Jordan of Jackson, Greg Beasley of Mississippi, Bobby and Robby Cox, both of Brownsville, and Constance Elise Sheppard and Stephanie Elizabeth Sheppard, both of Millington; and one great-grandchild, Zoey Cumberland.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Scott Cumberland; and a sister, Glenda Yarbrough.
Charitable contributions made in Mr. Cumberland's memory may be sent to the Middleton United Methodist Church.
