Jewel Dean Dodd Bissey

April 8, 1925 — February 3, 2019

Jewel Dean Dodd Bissey of Florence, AL passed away peacefully in Carrollton, Texas at the Oxford Glen Memory Care Home at the age of 93. Jewel was born April 8, 1925 in Iron City, Tennessee, the daughter of the late King Dodd and Ella Bailey Dodd. She married Jack Bissey on February 15, 1947 and they had 65 wonderful years together.

She grew up on a farm in Tennessee and worked the farm with her family until she left home for Detroit, MI with friends and got a job at the U.S. Rubber Company factory building military vehicle tires. She met Jack right after the war when he took a job at the same factory. Jewel went to Beauty School to become a beautician and she eventually had her own business in the basement of their homes in Mt Clemens, MI, and Richmond, MI until 1976 when they retired and moved to Cloverdale, AL. She always said she could not sit still and do nothing with her hands. She crocheted, canned, quilted, knitted, and made the best cobblers and pies in Florence! She and Jack for many years were staunch supporters and volunteers for the American Legion post in Florence. Jewel was a longtime member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Central Heights. She had many neighbors over the last years that took care of each other. We especially want to thank Lois and her sister Yvonne for their love and support for our mom. She is survived by their two sons, Jerry and wife Regina Bissey of Dallas, TX, Jack and wife Jean Margaret of Kingwood, TX, granddaughter Tiffany Bissey and husband John O’Callaghan, great grandchildren Seån, Saoirse Grace, Mullaney, grand daughter Kelly Bissey and fiancée Ali Hashemi, step grandson Casey Gary and wife Jennifer, great grandchildren Grace and Jacob, step grand daughter Jessica Escobar and husband Daniel, great grand children Marisol and Emma Rose, and sisters Betty Garner, Martha Wooten, and brother Paul Dodd. In addition to her parents Jewel was preceded in death by siblings Blanche Kleinschmidt, Jean Kay, and Cecil Dodd. Special thanks to all at Home Instead Senior Care and especially Tracy, Carla, and Jennifer. They gave loving care in Florence to our mom and we are forever grateful. The Oxford Glen Memory Care Home and Elysian Hospice during the last months and weeks of mom’s life gave both her and us great comfort.

In lieu of flowers please make any donations to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, 11025 County Road 15, Florence 35633.
