Laverne Milam Ledbetter

LAVERNE MILAM LEDBETTER

was born in Fulton, Mississippi on April 26, 1925 the daughter of the late Walker Whitten and Lillian Elzora Haynes Milam.

On April 21, 1946 she was united in marriage to Sidney J. Ledbetter, who preceded his wife in death on December 3, 2005.

Laverne attended Memphis State University and later worked as a secretary for the Dean's office at the University. After moving to Savannah she was the office manager for 8 years for Dr. Michael Smith. She was a very dedicated member and taught Sunday school at the First United Methodist Church in Savannah, Tennessee. She was member of Faith Bible Study and was president for 3 years of the United Methodist Women. Laverne was committed to her daily time in prayer and prayed everyday for her family and friends. She was one of the founding members of the Savannah Junior Auxiliary and served as president. Laverne was also member of the Garden Club, Savannah Book Club and served as an active PTO member.

Laverne was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed sewing, reading, gardening, and spending time with family and friends. Laverne also loved listening to music and watching sports; especially her favorite athlete, Tiger Woods, golfing and NBA basketball. She loved supporting her grandchildren in all of their activities. Laverne was a fabulous cook, known for her lemon cream cheese coffee cake, caramel cake, homemade ice cream and cobblers.

She passed peacefully with all her family at her bedside on January 22, 2020 at the age of 94 years, 8 months and 27 days.

Laverne is survived by her loving children, Sid Ledbetter and his wife Marcy, Martha Wolff and her husband Michael and Nancy Powell; grandchildren, Anne Peaks and her husband Brett, Drew Powell, Jordan Powell and his wife Sheridan, Daniel Wolff and his wife Christina, Christopher Wolff, Lillie Wolff, Matthew Ledbetter and his wife Chelsea and Stephen Ledbetter; great grandchildren, Hudson Peaks, Hayes Peaks, Shaefer Peaks, Wyatt Powell and George Ledbetter; brother, Walker Milam and his wife Helen; sister, Betty Bennett and her husband Sam; and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Jessie Nell Parrish.

Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church in Savannah, Tennessee.
