Lige Turman Hollis

Lige Turman Hollis, 69, of Waynesboro passed away at his home Tuesday, December 5, following an extended illness. A prominent businessman, he was the founder and retired executive director of Wayne Half-Way House, Inc. in Waynesboro and Middle Tennessee Detention Center in Columbia.

He was born in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee on November 7, 1949, the son of the late William Prater and Nell Turman Hollis. He was a life-long resident of Waynesboro. After graduating from Wayne County High School in 1966, he attended Austin Peay State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. A veteran of the United States Army during the Vietnam War era, he served his country as a guard on the German- Czechoslovakian border in Bavaria, Germany. He was a member of the Waynesboro Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro. He was a member of Masonic Lodge # 127 and American Legion Post # 130 in Waynesboro.

Lige began his career in the justice system as a counselor at Wayne County Boot Camp in Clifton. He transferred to DOC the division of probation and paroles where he served as a parole officer.

In 1992, he organized a juvenile corrections corporation opening Wayne Half-Way House as executive director and one of three corporate owners. He expanded his interest in juvenile justice in 2000 when he organized a second juvenile corrections corporation, Middle Tennessee Detention Center in Columbia, Tennessee, also serving as executive director and corporate partner there. After retirement in 2005 due to illness, he was succeed as executive director by his corporate partner and great friend Jason Crews, who continued as a loyal friend and dedicated personal support figure throughout the remainder of Lige's life.

Lige was preceded in death by one sister, Martha Nell Cole. He is survived by his sister Billie Jean Hollis, his first cousin who he regarded as a sister, Martha Jean Ray Belew of Lawrenceburg, his nephew Daniel Andrew Cole, Junior, his nieces Dana Cole Pope, Madora Cole Bevis and Andrea Paige Cole, all of Waynesboro, six great nieces and nephews, first cousins Edward Hollis Saxon, of Lawrenceburg and Nancy Johnson Turnor of Tullahoma and a host of friends.

Funeral services for Lige will be Friday, December 8, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at Shackelford Chapel, in Waynesboro with Brother Ben Littrell and Coy Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Waynesboro with Shackelford Funeral Directors of Wayne County in charge of the arrangements.
