LTC, James Frederick McFarland, Army, Ret. was born August 3, 1930 in Nu Mine, PA the son of the late Peter Frederick and Wanda Smeltzer McFarland
He was united in marriage to Jean Stricklen on January 28, 1951. Mrs. McFarland preceded him in death on February 28, 2012.
Mr. McFarland had a distinguished and honorable military career in the United States Army from 1952-1977. During his career, he was with 101st Airborne, 1st Special Forces and Commander of 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood. He served three tours in Vietnam, the first one as an advisor and interpreter. Richard Nixon's staff asked Mr. McFarland to be an interpreter when his cabinet went to China. While in the military, he along with his wife lived in 11 states and 6 foreign countries. The McFarland's shared their home with foster children and was very supportive of organizations that benefited Native American children.
After serving his country, he returned to Pennsylvania and served as road commissioner in Armstrong County for several years. He started raising beef cattle while living up north. When the McFarland's moved to Tennessee: he started raising Highland cows, bought a few horses and enjoyed retirement.
Mr. McFarland believed in serving his country and community. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member for 68 years. He was an Elder and active member of Bethel Springs Presbyterian Church. He had a masters degree in history, an avid collector of guns and coins, loved jumping out of a perfectly good airplane and a true Gentleman.
Mr. McFarland departed this life on October 8, 2019 in Corinth, Mississippi at the age of 89 Years, 2 Months, 5 Days. He is survived by a daughter, Jayme Lee McFarland of Casco, MI; two granddaughters, Christina McFarland, Briana Plunk; three great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Janice McFarland; a sister, Katheleen Rochelle Denchik of Texas; nephew, Michael Denchik; niece, Laura Denchik; and a host of close friends.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. McFarland was preceded in death by a son, James F. McFarland, Jr.; grandparents, Kosiesco and Drucilla McFarland.
