Martha Ruth Prather Edwards was born October 4, 1923 in McNairy County, TN, the daughter of the late J. C. Prather and Hattie McCormack Prather. She departed this life on March 27, 2020 in Selmer, TN. She grew up on the family farm and as a young adult worked at Brown Shoe Company. She married L. C. Forsythe and they moved to New Jersey in search for greener pastures. While working for Westing House, she went to school at night and learned cosmetology. Later she opened up her own beauty shop in retirement centers. She also did some modeling. In the nineties she moved back to the Selmer area and did some private care sitting with the sick. Later she went to work for McNairy County Health Care and remained until she broke a hip in 2017. She will be remembered by many for the way she cared for their loved ones at the nursing home.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers and three sisters: Raymond Prather, R. T. Prather, Clyde Prather, Ellis Prather, Bluford Prather, Joe Prather, Pattie Everett Springer, Lois Johnson and Blanche Griffin. She is survived by cousins, nieces and nephews. She is also survived by ex-husband, Bobby Roberts with whom she remained close.
She attended Falcon Baptist and Gravel Hill Baptist Churches. She accepted Jesus as her savior in 2017. She loved going to church as long as she was able.
Other than taking care of others, Ruth loved her flowers and considered herself an expert
Her family appreciates the staff at AHC of McNairy for their care and concern during her illness.
