Mrs. Hurd, age 86, of Jackson, formerly of Bolivar, passed from this life on Sunday morning, September 20, 2020 at her home.
She was born in Lancaster, OH to the late Earl Jennings Wrightsel and Florence Jessie Stiles Wrightsel. She is also preceded in death by her brother, Rev. Kenneth Wrightsel. Married to Mr. Donald R. Hurd on June 6, 1954, they were married for 35 years at the time of his death in December, 1989.
The Hurds moved to Hardeman County in 1960 where Mrs. Hurd was a beloved kindergarten teacher for many years in Bolivar before the cirriculum was absorbed into the public school system. She had also been a school teacher in Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. After her teaching career, she opened her own dress shop in Bolivar known as "The Purple Daisy" which she and her neighbor, JoAnn Brown, operated for 20 years. She moved to Jackson in 2011.
A loyal and active long-time member of the Bolivar First United Methodist Church, she helped start their bell choir, was pianist for the church, member of the UMW, attended Lynn Warner's Bible School Class (when she was not teaching the Junior High Sunday School Class) and ran the church's clothing room. In her leisure time, Mrs. Hurd enjoyed playing golf, making crafts, playing the piano, boating and, above all, loved spending time with her family, grandchildren and great-granddaughter.
She leaves two daughters, Cindy Garside and her husband, Phil; and Lisa Hurd, both of Jackson; two grandchildren, Leslie Hayes and her husband, John, of Brentwood, TN and Don Garside of Jackson; great-granddaughter, Clara; and several nieces.
