Mr. Young passed away early Wednesday morning at The Arbors At Heritage Place Assisted Living in Lexington, TN.
He was born in Toone, the son of the late Melvin Isaac and Ida Ethel Tate Young and had lived in Carroll County, TN since 1979. He was a farmer who worked with row crops, cattle and his specialty, growing fruit. A deacon at the Lavinia Baptist Church in Lavinia, TN, he was an active member having served in nearly every capacity at the church including Sunday School teacher and pulpit committee member.
Mr. Young was a World War II veteran where he served at Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. Among his decorations and citations were five bronze stars. After his return from service, he married the former Sue Fowler on Saturday, March 9, 1946. The Young's were married 65 years at the time of her passing August 25, 2011.
An outstanding husband and father, Mr. Young served as President of the Tennessee Horticultural Society on multiple occasions and had been a board member of the Farm Bureau. His expertise and advice in growing fruit were sought out by many including the University of Tennessee Agricultural Department.
He is preceded in death by his wife and parents; three sisters, Lorraine Wideman, Myrtle McCullough and Jean DeBerry; four brothers, Coleman and Marvin Young and two who died in infancy; and a son-in-law, William Conrad "Bill" Powers, Sr.
He leaves three daughters, Carolyn Powers of Somerville, Sheila (Miles) Mayfield of Toone and Cindy (Brad) Zahn of Bartlett, TN; two sons, Larry (Margaret) Young and Tim (Cathy) Young, both of Cedar Grove; one sister, Betty Harrison of Memphis; fifteen grandchildren, Jennifer (Bill) Walker, William Conrad (Dixie) Powers, II, Elisha (Dean) Puryear; Audra Powers, Rachel (Wes) Selbe, Marty (Rebecca) Young, Steve (Heather) Young, Christy (Adam) Martin, Hank (Bethani) Mayfield, Clint (Rachel) Mayfield, Hope (Kyle) Webster, Christy Young, Andrea (Hunter) Siler, Amanda Zahn and Andrew Zahn; and 22 great-grandchildren.
