Ruth Stewart Hammons, 94, of Bolivar departed this life Saturday morning, December 14 at Pine Meadows Healthcare Center.
She was born one of 9 children to Wilburn Elihue Stewart, Sr. and Ruby Doyle Stewart on March 8, 1925 in Hardeman County. She married Edsel W. Hammons on January 26, 1946 and he preceded her in death on December 20, 1987. She worked at Hardeman Garment and Cohen's Store, but was best known as "Mrs. Ruth", the cook at the Bolivar First Baptist Child Enrichment Center, where she lovingly made the best macaroni and cheese and other foods for the children for 29 years. She enjoyed traveling, going to Gatlinburgh, and flowers, and was a member of Bolivar First Baptist Church where she was active in the WMU and greeted church-goers at the door at every service.
Survivors include two sons, Dennis Hammons (Mary) of Lumberton, MS and Duane Hammons (Brenda) of Bolivar; three sisters, Betty Stewart and Linda Cranford, both of Bolivar and Janie Shearin(Fred) of Piperton; 7 grandchildren, Kim Graves, Josh Hammons, Tara Stanton, Aaron Frasure, Jonathan and Brooke Hammons and Robbie Hansford; 14 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah Frasure; a sister, Dorothy Carter; four brothers, Thaxter, Wilbur E., Jr., Bob and Murley Stewart; and a great-grandson, Kyle Frasure.
