Shirley Vandiver Barton Slaughter
April 12, 1939 — February 27, 2020
Mrs. Barton Slaughter passed away Thursday morning at her home.
She was born in Hardeman County and lived most all of her life here. Her parents were the late Lonnie Monroe and Ida Martha Hall Vandiver and in addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Pearl Lowrance and Emma Jean Eubanks; and three brothers, James, Paul and Charlie Vandiver.
Primarily a homemaker, Mrs. Shirley also had worked 12-15 years at Hardeman Garment Factory in Bolivar. She was a member of Bolivar First Baptist Church and in August, 2010 was united in marriage to Mr. Jessie J. Slaughter, who survives. In her leisure time, she enjoyed traveling and anything and everything involving her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She and Mr. Slaughter also enjoyed going square dancing together.
She is survived by her husband, Jessie J. Slaughter of Bolivar; three daughters, Barbara J. Anderson (Tom) of Cloverport, Debby B. Castleberry of Memphis and Susan M. Castleberry of Bolivar; two sons, Jeff W. Castleberry (Teresa) of Bolivar and Chris Castleberry of Cloverport; "Special Son", Jerry Morris of Cloverport; step-son, Jason Slaughter (Brandy) of Jackson; two grandchildren, Penny Garner (Lee) of Dyersburg and Tyler Castleberry; and two great-grandchildren, Laney Anderson Garner and Mary Burks Garner.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to Tennessee Quality Hospice, Gloria Coble, Carolyn George and Grace George for their excellent and compassionate care of Mrs. Shirley.
