Mrs. Tommie Dodd, age 97, departed this life for her heavenly home shortly after 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital Emergency Room. She was born October 27, 1921, the youngest child of the late William Bratcher and Jennie Stansell Hubanks and was reared in the Old Friendship community of Chester County, TN. She attended school at Old Friendship and Finger and worked at Salant & Salant for four years in the early 1940s. In 1946, she met the love of her life, Lloyd R. Dodd, and they were married March 29, 1946 in Corinth, MS. They were married for 64 years until Lloyd’s death in 2010.
In their early marriage, Lloyd and Tommie sharecropped with family and in the late summer of 1948, they purchased a small farm in the Deanburg community of Chester County. They lived there for the next 60 years farming, growing cotton in the early years and later changing to hog farming. A large garden was grown every summer producing a bounty of vegetables that Tommie cooked and canned. Her joy was cooking large meals for her family on holidays and every other day of the year.
She was a long-time member of Bethel Baptist Church, the Deanburg Community Club and a former member of the Deanburg Home Demonstration Club.
Tommie is survived by son, Danny Dodd & wife Beverly of Jackson, TN, two grandchildren, Shawn Dodd of Nashville, TN and Kara Dodd of Jackson, TN. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lloyd R. Dodd, son Gerald Dodd, brother W.B Hubanks, and sister Ruby Barnes.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 26, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Henderson-Crook Avenue Chapel with Bro. Ron Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, Henderson. The family will receive friends Thursday, April 25, 2019 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.
The family would like to thank the staff of Morningside Assisted Living for their wonderful care of Tommie for the past nine years.
