Tommye Sue McCalip was born June 21, 1925 in Montezuma, TN the daughter of the late Dr. Thomas Scott and Lillie Cude Davis.
Mrs. McCalip was a graduate of Chester County High School in Henderson, TN. After graduation her first job was at Kress in Jackson, TN; afterward she worked for Salant and Salant in Henderson. After the death of her father the family moved to Memphis, TN where she worked with Sears, Robuck & Company and later was employed by National Bank of Commerce until her marriage to Crump Mason McCalip, Jr. on August 3, 1946. Their home was blessed with 4 children, all girls: Jo Deryl, Joyce, Caroyl, and Alma Sue (Susie). Joyce was called home to Heaven on September 6, 1957 at 8 years of age. Tommye's husband of 38 years preceded her in death on March 25, 1985 at the age of 62.
Tommye loved her home; she enjoyed being outdoors, working in the yard and tending her flowers. She spent many cherished years with children, family and friends. Her 32 years with the Federal Agriculture Stabilization Service in Selmer were particularly enjoyable; she retired in September of 1985 as the county Executive Director. After retiring, Tommye worked in Medical Records at McNairy County General Hospital. She always exhibited a strong work ethic and wanted to stay active and make a contribution wherever she could. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Selmer, where she served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. Tommye was Worthy Matron for the Order of the Eastern Star for two terms, and also volunteered her time with the McNairy County General Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, the Jack McConnico Memorial Library, and other organizations. She always did her best to love and respect everyone.
Mrs. McCalip departed this life on September 6, 2020 in Selmer, Tennessee at the age of 95 Years, 2 Months, 16 Days. She is survived by three daughters: Jo Deryl Hockaday and husband William of Bethel Springs, TN, Caroyl Kirk and husband Donald of Stantonville, TN, and Susie Moore and husband Wayne of Humboldt, TN; 8 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren; and many extended family and friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. McCalip was preceded in death by a sister, Sammye Rhea; a brother, Joe Clifford Davis; and two step-brothers, Conan Davis and Crowley Davis.
