Verlon T. Cox, age 80, of Bolivar, departed this life on Thursday morning, November 11, 2021, at his home.
A native of Silerton and a life-long resident of Hardeman County, he was the son of the late Neely Alexander Cox and Ida Mae Chandler Cox. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
Upon graduation from high school, Mr. Cox joined the US Army for three years and was stationed in Germany. He was a proud member of the "Screaming Eagles" paratroopers with the 101st Airborne. A Baptist in belief, he worked as a physical therapist at Western Mental Health Institute for 18 years and also as a welder for the City of Bolivar Gas Department.
A strong-willed individual, Mr. Cox had a soft spot in his heart for children especially his grandchildren. Many times, he was known to buy meals for kids at McDonald's when he saw the need. In his leisure time, he enjoyed woodworking, fishing or taking his prized 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air "Two Post" to classic car shows in the area.
He leaves his wife, Wanda, whom he married on May 30, 1990; two step-sons, Brad (Nancy) Maxwell of Iuka, MS and Joey (Brandy) Maxwell of Middleton; a son, Verlon Wayne "Boonie" Cox of Texas; a daughter, Tina (Kim) Holly of Selmer; two sisters, Margie Stack of Selmer and Grace Dukes of Georgia; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
