Allie E. Hurst was born December 19, 1910 in Selmer, Tennessee. He was the son of Tom Jeff and Edna Hurst. He died Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at his home with his wife, daughters and other family members at his side. He was married for 75 years, 7 months and 16 days to his beloved wife, Lavara (Doll) Higginbottom Hurst. His three daughters are Betty Barron of Sweetwater, TN, and Anita Moore and Linda Barnes (Rod), all of Selmer. His grandchildren include Jennifer Houston (Mark) of Sweetwater, TN; Lisa Weatherford of Marion, AR; and Dolly Jane Barnes of Selmer. His great-grandchildren are Jay Weatherford of Selmer; Leah Franks (Jeremy) of Sheffield, AL; Ross Houston of Sweetwater, TN; and Virginia Leigh Houston, a senior at the University of Mississippi. Great-great grandchildren include 6 year old Lauren Franks and 4 year old Jett Franks. He is also survived by a sister, Evelyn McLain of Florida.

Mr. Hurst was very active in civic and community organizations. He was a member of First Christian Church of Selmer where he served as a deacon for over 30 years. Mr. Hurst served on the McNairy County School Board for 34 years and was very proud of the county school system. He was President of the McNairy County Farmer's Co-op Board of Directors when the Co-op was moved to its present location. Other agricultural leadership positions included terms on the Farmer's Home Administration County Committee and Soil Conservation Board. He was a staunch supporter of the Republican Party.

Allie owned and operated a sawmill and lumber business until he started farming full-time in 1955. He was one of the first farmers in the area to grow soybeans and built the first farrowing barn in McNairy county in 1957. Mr. Hurst maintained a purebred Polled Hereford and Shorthorn operation, but in later years he ran a commercial beef herd. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren showed prize-winning steers, heifers, and market lambs throughout the state.

Mr. Hurst was preceded in death by his parents; nine brothers and sisters; two sons-in-law: Jerry Barron and Joe Vance Moore; one grandson-in-law, James Weatherford; and his two precious grandsons, Ross Barron (1978) and Matt Barnes (2002).
