ALMA JOSIE SIPES DURHAM



Alma S. Durham, 94, departed this life on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at Hardin Medical Center Nursing Home in Savannah.



She was born Alma Josie Sipes in Hardin County, TN the daughter of Mary Rena Blackwood Sipes and John William Sipes.



She was united in marriage to Vernon Edward Durham October 1, 1932. They were married fifty-six years and six children were born to this union.



Alma was a factory worker for many years-but her first love was her home where she was an exemplary and "modeled the Proverbs 31 woman". She loved vegetable gardening and working in her flower beds. She was a member of the Sunshine Home Demonstration Club where she volunteered and quilted until she was 85 years old. She left a legacy of beautiful handmade quilts for her family. She served as a "Pink Lady" at Hardin County Medical Center for several years.



She was a member of and attended Love and Truth Church for as long as she was able and continued to watch their TV ministry even until last week.



Alma was known by her family and friends as a person who wanted to do things for you with no fanfare!!! Comically, she was always interested in current events, especially politics. She thought no one could communicate the evening news better "Charlie Gibson" and "Gary Pickens" was the best predicter of the weather. She also loved to hear Wayne Jerrolds, Emmett Garner and their Bluegrass gang at every opportunity.



Alma is survived by her children: Wilma Jean Jones: Jerry Wayne Durham and Judy; Billy Sanders Durham and Debbie; Jimmie Elouise Blackwelder and Larry; Mary Jo Warrington and Paul.



Ten grandchildren: Betty Jo Dunne, Tommie Dorlene Rodgers, Robert Lynn Jones, Joel Wayne Durham, Jimmy Sanders Durham, Amy Blackwelder Garrison, Dale Wayne Blackwelder, Meredith Warrington, Farra Rae Durham and Grant Sanders Durham.



She also leaves 12 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by one son-in-law, Arnold Phillips, many cousins, nieces and nephews who are very special to her, as well as a host of friends.



She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one daughter, Doris Alene Phillips and one son-in-law, Calvin Jones. She was also preceded in death by one brother, John Leland Sipes on the U. S. S. Indianapolis and one sister, Altha Dee Taylor of Humboldt, TN.
